Events will show that in 1844 five families had settled in this part of Dade County, coming mostly from Kentucky and Tennessee. And among those who were most prominent in the first organization are the following names: Willis, Mallory, Farris, SCOTT, Cox, JONES, COBLE, POINDEXTER, Gambill, LOLLAR, Hudspeth and Merrick.
